Are You the One - Soulmate Style
Nov. 12th, 2022 05:39 pmI've been watching terrible reality tv recently because it requires little thought and seeing other people's petty problems sometimes makes me feel better about my petty problems.
Anyway, one of the shows is "Are You the One" (limited seasons available on Netflix), and the basic premise is that 10 guys and 10 girls are sorted by an algorithm and the singles have to figure out which person in the house is their "perfect match". Every week they can send a couple to the "Truth Booth" which will tell them whether the couple is actually their match, or if they picked the wrong person to pair with.
If they figure out the 10 perfect matches then they win a million dollars (split 20 ways, so not as much as it sounds).
In the seasons I've watched, they've always won the money, but most of the time the romantic connections happen between non-perfect couples and the drama is DRAMATIC.
The absolute chaos of people in the house refusing their perfect matches and choosing the person they had made a connection with made me completely reconsider Soulmate AUs. Like imagine in an Untamed Soulmate AU where they were put in the house and didn't know who their soulmate was and they were challenged to identify who fate had chosen for them as their match. I don't know what the soulmate identifying mark would be in this case and I don't care because I'm here for the CHAOS.
So almost none of the soulmates are endgame couples, that's the main thing. It's about choosing your own destiny and your own person. But also, I'm cackling at the thought of who the soulmates would really be.
Soulmate pair 1, because I can't not: Lan Wangji and Mianmian. Sooooo funny. Obviously wangxian and Mianmian/her husband endgame.
Soulmate pair 2: Wei Wuxian and Jiang Yanli. They love each other a lot but not romantically (in this AU Cangse Sanren and Wei Changze are alive, so they weren't raised as siblings but Wei Wuxian is still close to the Jiang sibs). Endgame for Jiang Yanli is still Jin Zixuan because I love them too.
Soulmate pair 3: Nie Mingjue and Lan Xichen. The only couple that actually gets together that are soulmates. The first perfect match confirmed by the Truth Booth. Future advertisements of the show hold them up as the example of soulmates working out. The reunion episode is everyone being invited to their vow renewal.
Soulmate pair 4: Meng Yao and Jiang Cheng. This is. So hilarious. I've laughed for like 3 minutes just thinking about the looks on their faces when they're confirmed soulmates. They both leave the house single (although Meng Yao does seem to have something going on the side with Nie Mingjue/Lan Xichen, and the gossip that comes from that is also epic)
Soulmate pair 5: Nie Huaisang and Mo Xuanyu. Yeah, I ship it. Mo Xuanyu is into it but Nie Huaisang was really just there to make sure his brother got the soulmate he wanted, with no outside interference. Mo Xuanyu ends up leaving the house with Wen Ning, and no one is quite sure who Nie Huaisang has or has not hooked up with.
Soulmate pair 6: Jin Zixuan and Wen Ning. I just think there's something really poetic about it you know?
Soulmate pair 7: Wen Qing and Wang Lingjao. They knew each other before the show because Wang Lingjao dated Wen Qing's Terrible Cousin Wen Chao before they had a very explosive breakup. Wen Qing is so done with this show she is ready to go HOME. Do they hook up in the Boom Boom Room? Maybe.
I realize Mianmian's husband is kind of the odd one out because he doesn't have a soulmate listing, but pretend there's another OC there for him. The poor OC. Living in this house of horror.
Also, they win the million dollars at the end, everyone figuring out their matches for the final week but the screaming fights and accusations leading up to that point. Wangxian flatly refuse to date anyone else in the house and everyone in the side interviews is so mad at them for jeopardizing the money, Meng Yao is about to THROW HANDS and the only thing that stops him is Lan Xichen. I would one thousand percent watch this show, the drama would be unreal.
